Shaman of the Wood - Process

Description

Here are some process shots of the Shaman of the Wood.

Image 1: Late stage sketch. At this point I've already determined the pose I want to go with and started really flushing out his gear. From here I cleaned up the sketch a bit more just in case I wanted to keep some line art in the finished piece, although in this case I decided to paint over all of the lines in the end.

Image 2: Flat colors and a simple background color. I don't always do a complete set of flat colors, but for this piece I had a few different color schemes in mind and it's just much easier to play with different colors when you have flats on separate layers.

Image 3: A very rough set of shadows and highlights are applied using a multiple layer (shadows) and an overlay layer (highlights). Most of this will be fully painted over, but again it gives me a nice starting point. As you can see I was still experimenting a bit with the background color.

Image 4: This is the final image just so you can see it side by side with the others. Details, details, details. This is the most time consuming part, but it can also be the most fun!

I think people like seeing this sort of stuff, so if so just let me know and I'll continue to post more process shots for pieces as I create them. Next time I hope to capture more stages in between.
